How to Rid a Property of Snakes
- 1). Remove elements of your property that snakes commonly use as habitat. These areas include dry, rocky areas, tall weeds, flower pots and compost piles. If snakes don't have comfortable places to live on your property, they are likely to find other places that they find more appealing to stay.
- 2). Control rodents by keeping pet food indoors, gardens harvested and trash cans sealed tightly. Snakes will only reside in places with food, so if you remove snakes' food sources, you are likely to force the snakes off of your property.
- 3). Build snake fences around your property. A snake fence can be built with wire cutters and fine wire mesh. Fences as short as 2-to-3-feet high are adequate in preventing snakes from entering the property.
One method to build an effective snake fence is to use 1/4-inch mesh wire screening and build it up 30 inches. Bury 6 inches of the mesh below ground to provide stability for the fence. Build the fence at a 30 degree angle from bottom and plant the stakes inside of the fence. Ensure that all tall or bushy vegetation is removed from the areas surrounding the fence. - 4). Place snake traps throughout your property and periodically check them to see if snakes have been trapped in them. The best places to lay snake traps are in old hiding grounds, such as where logs and rocks used to be prior to removal. Snakes are caught live in traps, so handle them with caution when relocating the snakes, or consider hiring a professional.
