The change in life can come with a whole range of emotional and physical hurdles to get over.
But one of the biggest for many women is how to get a good night's sleep.
Thankfully there are now a number of different solutions that can help relieve menopause sleep problems.
But before we look at those, let's get an understanding of what causes these problems in the first place.
The changes in hormone level around menopause can lead to the phenomenon of hot flashes.
This is where the body's heat regulation system mistakenly believes it is too hot and tries to cool down by sweating and dilating the blood vessels near the skin.
This can give a feeling of suddenly being very hot.
It frequently occurs at night and has lead to the frequently heard term of night sweats.
For some women this is a real ordeal with them waking up drenched in sweat.
This can lead to sleep disturbance and tiredness during the following day.
There is also the guilt of disturbing a partner during the night.
Some women also have disturbed sleep due to the increased anxiety levels that are associated with menopause.
The emotional effects of the menopause should not be overlooked.
To help relieve the physical symptoms it is important to keep the bedroom cool.
You can achieve this with air-conditioning, although some people are reluctant to do this, not least because of the cost.
A novel invention has been the bedfan, which sends a cooling breeze of air underneath the bedclothes so that you remain cool throughout the night.
Rather than wearing nylon nightwear that can make you sticky, consider investing in some menopause pajamas made from a moisture wicking fabric.
This type of fabric has been used in sportswear for sometime and moves sweat away from the body to the outside where it can evaporate.
This is an ideal way to stay dry if you suffer from night sweats.
Also make sure that you use natural fiber sheets and pillowcases rather than man made.
If you are suffering from anxiety there are several different techniques that you could use to help this.
Some women have found that learning yoga and relaxation techniques have been of tremendous value.
Taking up physical exercise can also be beneficial.
This can also boost the levels of endorphins that will give you a feeling of general well-being.
