Instructions on Sewing a Two Slice Toaster Cover
- Make the choice of fabric you want to use. You can buy two different prints or you can use an already pre-quilted fabric. Many pre-quilted fabrics come with different prints on each side. Buy heavy-weight fabric if you don't buy something besides pre-quilted fabric. Do not forget to purchase batting for your toaster cover if you buy unquilted material.
- Measure your toaster. Most toasters are standard, but it is a good idea to measure anyway. Measure the length, the width and the height. For toasters that measure 14 inches by 4-1/2 inches by 7 inches, buy 3/8 yard of 45-inch wide fabric and 3 yards of bias tape. For toasters that measure 10 inches by 7 inches by 7 inches, buy 1/4 yard of fabric and 2-1/2 yards of bias tape. Add two inches to all of your toaster measurements and cut out two rectangles of each fabric. Cut two pieces of batting to the same measurements.
- For pre-quilted fabric, layer the two pieces of fabric with right sides together. Pin together. For unquilted fabric, layer the fabric and batting on a flat surface in this order: inside fabric (right side down), batting, outside fabric (right side up), outside fabric again (right side down), batting and outside fabric again (right side up). Pin all the layers together.
Sew around the sides and the top of the toaster cover. Trim away any excess fabric and batting with scissors. Flatten the seam to make a triangle at both of the corners of the toaster cover. Measure from the point down the seam about two inches. Sew across the seam. Trim off the triangle. This gives your toaster cover a rectangular shape when the cover is on. Turn the cover right side out. Pin the bias tape all around the bottom edge of the toaster cover. Sew in place to complete the project.
