Outer Space Art Projects

The culmination of outer space and art not only provide artists with fun activities, but it is also an educational pursuit, as such activities can be used to teach about the worlds that lie beyond our own. The constellations, planets, comets and other celestial objects can be the basis of attractive artwork that broaden the artist's horizons. - The coffee filter Earth is a quick, easy and attractive art project to create. Fill a squirt bottle with water. Flatten out a coffee filter and haphazardly color green and blue blobs on it with washable markers. Once your coffee filter is colored to your liking, use the squirt bottle to lightly mist it with water--as you do, the marker will bleed, creating a colorful blend of green and blue that resembles the way the oceans and land masses look on earth from outer space.
- Create a mobile of the planets from a hanger and Styrofoam balls. Purchase Styrofoam balls in an array of sizes--small, medium and large--one for each planet and one for the sun. Use paint to color the balls so that they resemble the planets and sun. Once the balls have dried, tie pieces of fishing wire around each one and hang them from the hanger in the order they appear in space. The finished product can be used as a decoration to hang from the ceiling of a room.
- This art project is not only attractive, it is also interactive. Clean out a water or soda bottle and remove the label. Fill the bottle with silver glitter, star and spaceship confetti. On the outside of the bottle, place star shaped stickers. Fill the bottle with water and blue food coloring. Line the rim of the bottle lid with glue and screw it back on the bottle. When the bottle is shaken, it will look as if shooting stars are soaring throughout the water.
- Create a sun out of a paper plate. Paint the front and back of a white paper plate yellow. While the paint it drying, cut long and short rectangles out of yellow construction paper. When the plate has dried, attach the construction paper rectangles to the perimeter of the paper plate with glue or staples. You can make the sun appear more realistic by using black markers to create sun spots.
