Paul starts out in Ephesians by talking about who we are in Christ, and about the finished work of Christ, but in Ephesians 6:10-18 says, "(Finally), my brethren, be (strong in) the Lord and in the power of His might.
Put on the( whole armor of God), that you may be able to stand against the (wiles) of the devil.
(For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood), but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in heavenly places.
Therefore take up the (whole armor of God), that you may be able to (withstand) in the evil day, and having done all to stand.
(Stand therefore), having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints.
" I want to bring a few things out in the Greek about the verses above: (1) Finally: Above anything else.
(2) Strong in: This paints a picture of an explosive power contained in something.
In other words, God, in all of His power, lives on the inside of every born-again child of God.
A good picture of this would be a fish inside an aquarium filled with water.
Christ would represent the aquarium, we would be the fish, and the water would be the power of God.
What Paul is telling us is that we're locked up together, with that power, in Jesus Christ, and that the very throne of Almighty God is behind us.
(3) Wiles: The word 'wiles' in the Greek is made up of two Greek words and it means 'traveling a road'.
What we're seeing here is a picture of the devil traveling a road with one destination in mind, which is to gain control of our mind/thoughts.
(4) Whole armor of God: Notice, this isn't our armor, it's God's armor.
I want to clarify this for everyone: God's armor/weapons are not carnal (2 Corinthians 10:4), meaning they're not guns or any other type of physical weapon, our weapons are spiritual because we're in a spiritual battle.
(5) For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in heavenly places: This is a picture of the demonic world broken down into divisions.
Satan is only one being and he can't be everywhere at once but he has many, many divisions of demons.
(6) Withstand: In the Greek this paints a picture of a battle/attack going on and you are withstanding.
(7) Therefore Stand: This is saying, after the battle, you're still standing and you're standing in such a way that you're ready for the next battle.
In the Greek the picture Paul is painting for us is that (finally), above anything else, we need to realize that we must get dressed in the whole armor of God because we're in a spiritual battle with Satan and his army.
Satan and his army have only one objective in mind, which is to gain access into our lives through our mind/thoughts.
Folks, Satan hates the church, he doesn't want to just inflict a little pain upon us, he wants to destroy us, and the way he goes about doing this is through our minds/thoughts.
That's why Paul wants us to 'know (finally) above anything else', we need to get this!
