How to Winterize Outside Home Water Pumps
- 1). Erect a small enclosure around your pump if it's not already enclosed. The enclosure should measure at least 4 feet by 4 feet. Purchase an appropriate pre-fabricated building and erect it following the manufacturer's instructions.
- 2). Measure the height and width of the water pump, the ceiling and wall space to calculate how much insulation the project will require. Do not include the floor--the floor should be left uninsulated.
- 3). Cover the walls and ceiling of the structure with fiberglass or extruded styrene foam insulation. Extend the insulation into the ground about one foot below the surface, if possible.
- 4). Construct a square box with a lid using the insulation to fit over the pump for an additional layer of protection. Cut the insulation to make it a snug fit and connect the corners, layers and lid with styrofoam adhesive. Make the box at least two layers thick.
- 5). Fit the box over the water pump.
- 6). Test the lid to ensure that it opens and shuts well, and provides adequate access to the water pump.
- 7). Pour sand around the bottom of the box to a depth of about six inches to seal the box.
