Say Something Smart Because Everyone is Talking!

I think Twitter is fantastic and so is Facebook.
It's the dawn of the new internet era and we've come a long way from the time when Alexander Graham Bell first told people that you don't actually have to be face-to-face with people in order to talk to them.
A pretty darn long way..
..
While it's fantastic news for advertisers and marketers of products and services, as sorry as I am to say this, some people are doing it wrong.
I am going to use (once again) Facebook and Twitter as an example.
Actually, just Twitter would do.
On the sideline, I've noted that Twitter and Facebook is not for everyone - I've had friends and family members who cringe whenever they see an update for me..
..
and they're thinking, "I hope she didn't just tell the world what we talked about last night! I'll kill her!!!" I believe that some people just like to keep to themselves and prefer to not dry their dirty laundry in the open.
I respect that.
But does this mean that these very private people will never get the whole online social networking thing and will never be able to catch onto the fad? Are they going to lose business to their competitors just because they're more private? Nah! Don't worry about it.
It's not the end-all and be-all.
Just because everyone on your friends list don't know the name of your dog, what's your favorite color and you personally don't like Obama does not mean that you're going to lose anything.
There are ways to get around it.
One of the ways is to create a group or create an anonymous account or corporate account.
Admittedly, it's harder that way and less personal but record shows that it works and sometimes, it works much faster.
Can't disagree with some of these more private people either because you know why? Sometimes, I think some people just stepped over the line.
Twitter and Facebook (especially Twitter) can be an online marketing tool and everyone's on it (my dinosaur of a brother is on it, so, everyone should be already!) but the problem is everyone's pushing and shoving and leaving a long trail of tweets (smoke) behind them that sometimes, it's hard for even people like me, to see who's pushing and who's died and disappeared! The line between spamming via email and spamming on Twitter/Facebook is very clear.
You spam via email, you get caught and someone kicks you.
It's legal to spam on twitter and Facebook because the owner of the account has every single right on the Online Marketing Bible Of Truths to un-friend you.
This makes spamming quite alright on these online social networking sites, unfortunately.
I can't quite stand the fact that some people are literally screaming all the time on twitter and facebook.
As an online marketing consultant, I can tell you that THAT is not the way to do it.
Every few minutes, something pops up from the same person and it goes lalalalala, blahblahblahblah..
..
all over the place! The point of having a twitter or Facebook account is..
...
get this and REMEMBER THIS..
..
to make a connection with people.
NOT annoy them! What's the difference between an online social networker compared to a sales person who won't stop knocking on your door? Nothing.
This reminds me of a very famous marketing expert, Dale Carnegie.
Anyone remember what he said about marketing? Well, one thing I remember very well about Carnegie's book is that he said that in order to be successful in selling, you don't need to be good at talking.
Instead, you need to be an exceptional listener instead! Take a look at Twitter and Facebook and the kind of things that people are posting in there..
..
do YOU think Dale Carnegie is going to have a Facebook account? Do you think he would be updating his twitter account while he's having lunch with his business partners? I didn't think so either.
That is..
..
if he's still alive today.
Online, all these people are yapping away and I'm not sure if I want to hear everyone talk at the same time.
Have you ever wondered, with so many people tweeting and talking at the same, who is listening or reading? Is anyone actually reading what you've written or updated so far? If you have 20,000 followers under your twitter account or 1,500 friends in your Facebook account, are you even catching on to what your friends are saying or what is happening in their lives? If you have 20,000 followers, in five seconds, your very own tweet (30 seconds ago) would be three pages down by the time you log in to your account again.
That's ridiculous because nobody is reading anything.
So..
..
the point would be..
..
yup, lost.
The secret to online social networking is to lend your ear, listen and then respond accordingly.
You NEED to be genuine in trying to connect with these people instead of posting cheesy comments that sounds, ironically, like an advertisement instead.
(read: go to my website, you'll find the advice you need there).
That's like, whoa, it's so personal, I'm literally emptying the Kleenex supply here.
:-) Is it tiresome? Oh yes it is.
But have I ever said that to successfully market yourself through the online social networking channel, it's going to be EASY? So, make every tweet or status update count instead of flooding people with information.
And then listen out for ways you can help people, lend an ear or a shoulder to cry on and THEN you're on the right track.
