How to Make a Quilted Mariner Star
- 1). Cut apart the paper pieces of the star pattern. The pieces should be numbered already. If not, number the pieces before you cut them, starting with the middle piece.
- 2). Place one background paper piece on the backside of the background fabric. Pin together and cut the piece. Repeat for the remaining background pieces.
- 3). Place a star paper piece on the backside of the fabric for the main star points; pin and cut. Repeat for all the pieces of the main star, then pin and cut the pieces of the secondary star points.
- 4). Place the material sides of Piece 1 and Piece 2 together and remove the pins. Sew Piece 1 to Piece 2, using a 1/4-inch seam. Sew through the paper and the material; you will remove the paper later. Fold open the pieces and iron the seam flat.
- 5). Continue sewing the pieces to one another in numerical order, removing pins and ironing the seams as you go. You will start in the middle and work around the star, placing background and star-pieces together as you sew.
- 6). Iron the front and back of the completed star, making sure all of the seams lie flat.
- 7). Remove the paper pieces from the back of the fabric star using a seam ripper. Place the dull edge of the seam ripper close to the seam and press firmly. This will start a small tear from which you can pull the rest of the paper from the material.
- 8). Cut a backing piece in the dimensions of the completed star block. The backing piece can be the same material as the background of the star block.
- 9). Place batting between the backing and the star block. Pin together. Trim any excess batting from the edges of the material.
