How to Pack Fine Furniture for Moving
- 1). Consider applying a finish for fine woods to your furniture. Finishing the wood helps protect it from scratches. The exact directions for applying the finish will depend on which product you choose; follow the directions on the label.
- 2). Take pictures of your fine furniture from various angles before you pack. This provides proof of the condition of your furniture. Scanio Moving & Storage states that if your furniture becomes damaged, you may use these photos for your insurance claim.
- 3). Disassemble the furniture. This may not be possible for all pieces of furniture. In some cases, you may only be able to remove the legs. However, shipping the furniture in pieces may reduce the risk of damage. When you remove a piece, place it in a labeled plastic bag. Place the screws, tools and other pieces for reassembly in another labeled bag, to reduce possible confusion when you reach your destination.
- 4). Wrap your fine furniture in bubble wrap. When you secure two ends of bubble wrap, tape them to each other, not to the furniture. Cover the furniture in pads. Moving companies will often supply moving pads for furniture.
- 5). Cushion the furniture inside the moving van with blankets, sofa cushions, pillows and similar items. Scanio Moving & Storage recommends placing these items inside plastic bags to keep them clean.
