Ideas for a Farm-Themed First Birthday Party
- Use bright colors like red, blue and green for decorations and pick up anything you can find with animals already printed on it. If you're having trouble with finding decorations or looking to save money, make your own. Use sponges shaped like ducks, cows, pigs and other animals to decorate posters to hang around the party. Make sure to avoid choking hazards like plastic confetti. Hang all streamers and banners out of reach unless you're okay with the children ripping them down.
- Unless there are a lot of older kids at the party, keep all games and activities geared toward a 1-year-old's skill level. Instead of structured game with a lot of rules, focus on activities led by adults that kids can enjoy. Choose colorful large books about animals, sing popular farm songs such as "Old McDonald Had a Farm" and sit the kids together in a circle to enjoy a little "show." If you're uncomfortable with reading or singing to the children, check with other adults or hire a teenager, librarian, preschool teacher or music teacher. Buy or borrow a parachute and have the children sit around it; ask parents to help you out and hold on to the edges of the parachute. Put stuffed barnyard animals onto the parachute and have the parents make them hop and jump around. Children can go under or on top of the parachute while the parents and adults sing popular farm songs or other songs about animals.
- When baking or purchasing a birthday cake, keep in mind that some young children still aren't ready for most of the ingredients found in a typical birthday cake. Many baby books, websites and cook books have recipes for baby-friendly birthday cakes. Follow these recipes to make the cake batter. Once you have the batter, use cake pan shapes that are shaped like different barnyard animals or decorate your square or rectangle shaped cake to look like a barn. Put plastic farm animals on top of the cake. Serve juice or milk and talk about where the drinks came from.
