    • 1). Review the contents of your hard drive and determine which files, if any, you wish to transfer over to the new drive. Copy the files onto an external drive or burn them onto a blank CD-R. Shut down the computer. Wait 30 minutes before proceeding.

    • 2). Turn off all peripheral devices connected to the computer. Unplug every cable connected to the MacBook's ports, saving the power cord for last. Close the laptop's display. Spread out the soft, lint-free cloth on a stable work surface. Place the computer on top of the cloth, with the bottom panel facing upwards.

    • 3). Examine the bottom panel and locate the small circle with a groove running down its center. Insert the edge of the small coin into the groove. Twist the coin a quarter-turn to the right to unlock the battery module. Lift up the edge of the battery module, located next to the small circle, and remove the module from the laptop's base.

    • 4). Ground yourself by touching the exposed metal in the battery bay. Inspect the interior of the battery bay and locate the three screws installed along one side of the bay; these screws secure an L-shaped metal door. Use the Phillips screwdriver to loosen the screws; do not attempt to remove the screws completely. Pull the metal door free of the bay and set it aside.

    • 5). Find the white tab located on one side of the battery bay. Pull the tab toward the opposite end of the bay to extract the hard drive module from the hard drive bay. Remove the screws securing the hard drive to the hard drive caddy. Remove the hard drive from the caddy and install the new drive in its place; reinstall the previously-removed screws.

    • 6). Slide the hard drive module back into the hard drive bay. Fold the end of the white tab underneath the bottom edge of the installed module. Reinsert the L-shaped metal door and tighten the three screws; if necessary, use the edge of the plastic card to push in the edges of the rubber gaskets attached to the rear of the door.

    • 7). Reinstall the battery module. Hold the battery module down and use the coin to twist the small circle a quarter-turn to the right, locking the battery in place. Return the computer to an upright position and reconnect the power cord.

    • 8). Open the display and turn on the computer. Insert the "Mac OS X Install Disc 1" into the optical drive. Follow the onscreen instructions. Insert the installation discs for your applications and run the installer programs. Transfer over any data you saved to an external hard drive or CD-R.
