How to Remove Unknown Stains
- 1). Soak the stained garment in cold water for an hour. Sponge a small amount of detergent on the stain, rinse thoroughly and let it air-dry.
- 2). Apply a pre-treatment solution designed for combination stains, following the manufacturer's instructions on the solution's container. Wash clothing with all-fabric bleach and your usual detergent.
- 3). Spot treat the stain with dry cleaning solvent. Place the garment with the stained side on a clean stack of rags and wet another clean white rag with dry cleaning solvent. Pat the stain from the outside edges in to avoid spreading the stain. As the stack of rags absorbs the stain, move to a clean spot on the rags. Continue until the stain is gone, then launder to remove the solvent.
- 4). Mix 1 cup distilled water, 1 cup rubbing alcohol, and 2 tsp. liquid dish detergent in a clean spray bottle. Spray the solution on the stains, then launder as usual.
- 5). Make a paste by mixing 1 tsp. of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide with cream of tartar. Apply the paste to the stain with a clean white rag and let it set for 15 minutes. Brush or rinse off the paste and launder with your usual detergent.
