Unless you have built a home from scratch and have had a dedicated architect and interior designer to hone it to your specifications the chances are you have moved into a home with someone else's décor. If you like the way the previous occupants have decorated then this is brilliant, however if you don't then the chances are you are living in a house with walls and floor coverings grating on your nerves.

However all is not lost, there are ways around this and even if you have no clue regarding designing a room to suit your needs there are plenty of ways to achieve the look you want. The first thing is to decide what do you want the room to feel like, as the feeling of a room will reflect in your mood. A dark grungy room, with little light is not going to make anyone feel good about theirselves, but a room with light décor and cosy furnishings and modern furniture [http://www.space2.com] can make a person feel good within.

In order to create a harmonious balance with your life and your home, think about what the room is going to be used for, if the room is a main thoroughfare, it would make sense to have a darker carpeting or wooden flooring, to minimise the impact of footfall. Also, don't be fooled if you have a narrow hallway, with little light. The natural thought is to lighten up the flooring, however, this is not really possible if you have people traipsing in and out all day, a good idea is to use a strong and robust flooring such as coir, which is dark enough to minimise any stains from shoes and tough enough to last kid's piling in from school and pets running up and down.

If you are stuck for ideas on how to decorate, start a scrapbook either on your computer where you can save images and paste them or you can cut out images from magazines and newspaper and build your perfect room from ideas you have found. Once you have decided the look you like, you need to hone it even more. By thinking about the furniture you want use, such as the style of bedroom furniture or what you would like the furniture of your living room to be, it is important to remember your lifestyle. There is little point in going for white seating if you have pets and children, much better to go for leather, as it is easily wiped of spilt drinks and food.

By using your scrapbook, you will be able to see your personal style of what you like, maybe you tend to go for the traditional look or you may find there is a highly modern design influence with you, however the main important factor is, your scrapbook will point you in the direction which will make your home comfortable to you. As the wall coverings, the flooring, even the furniture you choose, will be individual to your personal taste.
