    Styles of Window Treatments

    • The safest window treatments for use around children are cordless honeycomb shades, grommet top draperies and roller shades with pull handles. Each of these operate without the aid of visible cords that can intrigue a child. Gathered curtains and other stationary panels are also relatively safe.

Even though wood, metal and vinyl blinds may be cordless, a child can still become entangled in the vertical cords holding the slats in place. Do not underestimate the things a curious child can do.

The pull cords on traverse rods must be anchored to the wall using a cord loop pulley, and the cord must be taut enough that a child cannot fit his head between the cords. Secure cord tiebacks so children cannot become entangled.

Roman shades or corded blinds must never be used near children. They must always be secured tightly to a cleat anchored high on the wall out of reach of children, even when the window covering is lowered fully and is resting on the window sill.

    Cord Retrofitting

    • Eliminate looped pull cords. Cut looped cords and discard the equalizer buckle, if any. Thread each cord through a tassel and double knot securely in place.

Install cord stops on all horizontal blinds and corded shades made before 2001. Lower the blind or shade to the proper length and lock cords at the headrail by pulling the cords at an angle. For each cord, pinch part of the cord together creating a loop near the headrail; slide the cord stop over the loop end. Pass the free end of the cord through the loop, loosely knotting the cord stop onto the cord. Tighten the knot one or two inches lower than the headrail to minimize movement of the inner cords.

Install tie-down devices or cord keepers on vertical blinds and drapes made before 1997. Insert the cord or chain into the device and attach the device firmly to the floor or wall. The cord or chain should be fully extended and pulled taut.

    Cord Safety Tips

    • Never place cribs, playpens, chairs or low furniture near windows or window treatments. Use only cordless window treatments in a child's room or home. Do not leave small children unattended, even for a moment. Keep all window coverings away from open flames and lamps.

    Installation Safety

    • Use a safe ladder when necessary. Do not stand on a chair. Be sure hardware is mounted correctly, using wood screws when drilling into studs, and molly bolts when installing on sheet rock. Be sure the screws and bolts can support the weight of the entire installation (rod, brackets, drapes). Use hardware rated heavy enough to support the window treatment and hardware, to minimize the danger of a heavy drapery or child pulling the rod out of the wall. Treat window coverings with fire retardant when used near fireplaces, stoves or in bedrooms. Use only tools and extension cords that are in good repair.
Keep children away from the area while you are working.

    Tripping Hazard

    • Make certain draperies or decorative window scarves are not so long that they cause a tripping hazard. Some "puddling" of formal draperies is acceptable but should not exceed six inches.
