DIY Headboard and Footboard
- 1). Cut the plywood to 4 feet by 8 feet or the dimensions needed for your headboard. Cut out another sheet of plywood 2 feet by 8 feet or use the dimensions you've planned for your footboard.
- 2). Cut four legs from the 1-inch by 4-inch boards to your desired height; check this against your bed frame to check for proper screw locations.
- 3). Sand any rough edges you created while cutting.
- 4). Spread your foam onto the ground and place your headboard on top of it. Trace around the headboard plywood, onto the foam, creating an outline of the headboard; repeat with the footboard plywood.
- 5). Cut your foam shapes using the electric carving knife.
- 6). Add a foot to the width and height measurements of your headboard and footboard; cut two pieces of cotton batting and two pieces of fabric to match these dimensions.
- 7). Iron your fabric. Lay it face-down on the floor or large, flat work surface. Lay the cotton batting for the headboard over it. Lay the headboard foam over the batting, then lay the headboard plywood over that. Repeat the process with your footboard materials.
- 8). Pull the batting over the sides of the headboard edges and staple it down, working all the way around the headboard. Start with a staple on each side, as well as one on the top and bottom and pulling and stapling at every 2-inch increment until the staples reach each other. Repeat the process with the footboard.
- 9). Drill several pilot holes in the legs you cut, all in the same place and measure and mark where you will attach them on the backs of the headboard and footboard. Attach the legs to the headboard and foot board using the wood screws.

Cover the legs with fabric, stapling the fabric to the back of the legs. - 11
Set the legs against your assembled frame, noting where screw holes fall. Mark these spots. Drill pilot holes in these spots, then screw the headboard and footboard to the frame to complete the process.
