randomhouse.com - Farrar, Straus and Giroux was founded in 1945, though Giroux didn't come on until decades later. They are known for publishing quality literary fiction and are considered one of the major publishing houses of the publishing world. Located in Manhattan, it was known for years as a large but feisty independent publishing house that wouldn't sell to a media conglomerate, at least not until it became part of the German Publishing Group Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck (GmbH) in 1995. They have published modern classics such as Tom Wolfe's "Bonfire of the Vanities," among other critically acclaimed bestsellers. They specialize in literary fiction. Writers must submit manuscripts through a literary agent to Farrar, Straus and Giroux for them to consider publishing it.
