    Farrar, Straus & Giroux

    • Farrar, Straus and Giroux was founded in 1945, though Giroux didn't come on until decades later. They are known for publishing quality literary fiction and are considered one of the major publishing houses of the publishing world. Located in Manhattan, it was known for years as a large but feisty independent publishing house that wouldn't sell to a media conglomerate, at least not until it became part of the German Publishing Group Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck (GmbH) in 1995. They have published modern classics such as Tom Wolfe's "Bonfire of the Vanities," among other critically acclaimed bestsellers. They specialize in literary fiction. Writers must submit manuscripts through a literary agent to Farrar, Straus and Giroux for them to consider publishing it.

    Simon & Schuster

    • Founded in January 1924 in Manhattan, Richard L. Simon and M. Lincoln Schuster first published "The Crossword Puzzle Book," which sold over 100,000 copies. They followed with three more crossword puzzle books, which all sold equally as well. This allowed their company to grow over the next few decades into one of the most powerful and subsequently influential publishing houses in the country, ranging from "Bambi" to the Pulitzer Prize winner "Now in November." Simon & Schuster were acquired by Field Enterprises, a Chicago Communications Company in the 1940s and then changed hands many other times from the 1970s to the present, as they are now owned by Viacom, Inc. They publish some of the most well known authors in the world, such as Stephen King, specializing in literary fiction as well as many bestselling non-fiction books. All manuscripts submitted to Simon & Schuster must be submitted through a literary agent.
