    • 1). Prepare the surface to be painted. Clean the vinyl area with rubbing alcohol and a damp rag. Dry the area with a terry towel.

    • 2). Add a coat of bonding primer, such as Aquabond or Gripper, to the surface. Apply the primer by brushing or rolling on the paint--use a 2-inch paint brush or a mini roller. Apply two layers of primer--each layer should dry two to four hours between coats. Tint the primer to the appropriate base coat color, if possible, to skip the next step.

    • 3). Apply the base coat. Use latex paint and apply it with a brush or roller. Use a solid coat of paint to cover the primer. Let it dry.

    • 4). Add decorative designs and elements. Use paint markers and pens for handwritten sayings on the seats. Paint different designs using artisan brushes. Use stamps and stencils to add larger designs. Let the paint dry for 24 hours.

    • 5). Apply several coats of clear, water-based polyurethane paint to protect the painted area. Brush on the paint in a thin layer; use caution because it will drip and run. Several thin layers are better than one or two thick layers. Let the paint and sealer cure for a week before using the stool.
