Why Meditate?

Why would anyone bother to sit down, be quiet and do nothing for periods of time when there is so much to do every day? We live in such a busy world which often demands so much from us as individuals, whether those demands are our career, our children needing care and attention, personal relationships or a hundred other things which challenge us from moment to moment.
So why indeed would you wish to spend time meditating? Well to start with many positive effects are attributed to meditation, including:
  • Reduced stress and anxiety
  • Increased levels of serotonin and other neural transmitters, having a positive effect on mood and behaviour
  • Improved immune functions
  • Increased sense of inner peace and happiness
  • Increased motivation and confidence
  • Improved relationships
  • etc etc.
    (The list goes on)
So with all these positive psychological and physiological effects it becomes clear that meditation can help with our modern and sometimes hectic lifestyles.
In fact, with the knowledge of these benefits, the true question you need to ask is "Why wouldn't you meditate?" with all the positive effects that meditation can bring, why not indeed? By simply giving twenty minutes or more a day to your self you can be so much more effective and efficient in all all areas of your life, ironically by doing nothing.
How good does that sound? However all these positive effects are secondary to the true purpose of meditation.
Meditation is a process that allows the practitioner to step beyond the habitual and conceptual ways of thinking and dissolve negative feelings and associations, allowing a deeper relaxed state of awareness.
Ultimately leading to a realisation of who we are.
This realisation reveals that at our essence is the very same creative potential that underpins all of existence.
Most of us believe that our thoughts are who we are, and are usually lost in a sea of constant mental chatter.
Learning to quiet the conceptual mind through meditation will allow life to play through you in greater and greater degrees of spontaneity.
Meditation is the primary tool available to us, which, enables the removal of the illusion of separation.
When an apparent individual comes to this realisation, a direct perception of reality is reported, unfiltered by the conceptual mind.
When you know who you really are you can stop being afraid of life, because you realize that there is nothing outside of you to be afraid of.
You can stop struggling to achieve things or to avoid things, because you embody the totality of existence.
You can see that there is nowhere to go and nothing to do.
Many people, meditate for other reasons.
Most people want an end to suffering.
They want to escape anxiety, depression, and other similar problems.
All of these apparent "problems" however, are symptoms of not knowing the true self.
When the nature of self is realised suffering simply drops away.
Meditation is the key which opens the door to the eternal self, and the Alpha Wave Meditation music CD set helps open this door much quicker and more efficiently.
