Activities About Parts of a Sewing Machine
- Play games to reinforce concepts and ideas learned about the parts of a sewing machine. Play a matching game, matching names of a part with their function or with a picture of how they look. Use flashcards in the same manner; have the name or picture of the part on one side of the card with the definition or function on the reverse side. Make a word search, using words of different parts of the machine. Use clues for the words that describe the function of the word.
- Have your students draw a diagram of the sewing machine. Provide a list of parts they need to include in their drawing and instruct them to diagram each part. Have them draw a line to each part on the diagram. On a separate sheet of paper, have them write a three to five sentence explanation of each part and its function in the sewing machine.
- With your student's owner's manual at their side, have them take apart the upper portion of their machine, including the needle holder, flywheel and belt, and the lower threading mechanism of the machine, including the bobbin casing. Provide each student with a list of parts they need to point out to you. When they have taken apart the required mechanisms, have each student reassemble the sewing machine so it is put back together in the same way.
- If you have a class of students using the same or similar style sewing machines, create a slide presentation that highlights the different parts of the sewing machine including its inner workings, functions and major parts. Have each student follow along with the presentation by sitting at their sewing machine so they can locate each part and ask questions if necessary. After the presentation, ask a series of game show-style questions based on the concepts learned and parts presented in the presentation. Reward correct answers with prizes.
