Accession Options.
(1) Direct Accession. Following OCS, candidates are commissioned as a Special Duty Officer (Oceanography), designator 1805. Approximately 6-8 quotas per year.
(2) Oceanography Option. Following OCS, candidates are commissioned as a Surface Warfare Officer (SWO) Student, designator 1165. After completion of Surface Warfare Officers School, Newport, RI, these officers are assigned to Division Officer Afloat duties on a fleet unit where they will complete an initial URL experience tour, qualify as a Surface Warfare Officer, and be redesignated as a SWO (1115).
These officers then have the option to redesignate to 1805 without board action and will be assigned to future duties as a Special Duty Officer (Oceanography). Approximately 4 quotas per year.
Additional comments.
(1) Advanced education. All career METOC Officers will attend the Naval Postgraduate School between 3 and 10 years of service to complete a Masters Degree in Meteorology and Physical Oceanography and earn a METOC subspecialty code (0047P). A select few (1-2 per year) may be eligible for doctoral studies; the METOC community hosts 25% of all PhD coded billets in the Navy's line inventory.
(2) Overseas duty. The METOC community is well represented throughout the world from Europe to the Caribbean to Hawaii to Asia to the Middle East. Many overseas duty stations are independent duty in support of forward-deployed staffs or military installations.
(3) Promotion opportunities. The METOC community is competitive with the Unrestricted Line (URL) communities for promotion to LCDR and higher (promotion to LTJG and LT occur at 2 and 4 years of commissioned service respectively).
METOC Officers promote to LCDR at approximately 9 years of service (slightly ahead of the URL), to CDR at approximately 16 years of service (slightly behind the URL), and to CAPT at approximately 22 years of service (even with the URL). The METOC community has one Flag Officer, Rear Admiral Lower Half.
