Comparison of iPod Types
- The iPod Shuffle is the smallest iPod both in terms of storage capacity and its physical size. The Shuffle's physical controls and clip make it suitable for wearing while jogging or exercising. There are two playback modes available -- play in order, where all the tracks are played sequentially, and shuffle, where all the tracks on the device are played in a random order. The built-in VoiceOver feature can be used to read out track information, playlist names and battery status. Audio content (music, podcasts and audiobooks) are supported by the device, but video material and apps cannot be synced or played on a Shuffle. The Shuffle is available in silver, blue, green, orange or pink, comes with 2GB of storage space, and offers up to 15 hours of playback on a single battery charge.
- The iPod Nano offers a compromise between the Shuffle's portability and the advanced features of the Touch. It comes with a 1.5-inch 240 by 240 pixel touchscreen display for viewing album art and playlists and controlling playback and other functions. It plays all types of audio content and displays photos, but cannot play video material. The device comes with support for Genius mixes, an FM tuner and radio tool, and it can be used as a pedometer too. Like the Shuffle, the Nano has a built-in clip for attaching it to clothing easily. The Nano is available with 8GB or 16GB of on-board storage, and comes in silver, blue, green, red, graphite, orange or pink. A single battery charge lasts up to 24 hours.
- The Touch is the most advanced and most expensive device in the iPod line-up, offering full audio and video capabilities and support for apps. The Touch sports a 3.5 inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 960 by 640 pixels. It comes with Apple tools including email, calendar and a mobile version of the Safari Web browser, and it supports third-party programs from the online App Store as well. The iPod Touch features a front camera, a back camera (capable of shooting HD 720p video) and support for FaceTime video calling. There's built-in Wi-Fi connectivity and Bluetooth support. 8GB, 32GB and 64GB models are available, and up to 40 hours of playback can be achieved with a single charge.
- The Classic brings with it more storage space than any other type of iPod -- it's suitable for those with large collections of music and video. Unlike the other iPods, it uses a small mechanical hard drive rather than flash memory to store content. The Classic offers 160GB of storage space and is available in silver or in black. The 2.5 inch non-touchscreen display can be used to watch videos, view photos and manage music playback -- key functions are controlled with the clickwheel underneath the display. Up to 36 hours of playback are possible from a single charge. Black and silver models are available.
