Anarchy on the Streets of Oldham, England
I watched a Panorama report last night on BBC1 which chilled the blood.
Were these the streets of Basra we were watching, which on a weekly basis throw up reports of beatings, abuse, rape and other examples of senseless violence on the streets? No, not Basra, but any Saturday night in Oldham in England.
I wonder how many people watched that programme and then turned it off with a shake of the head before making a cup of tea.
I think the state of England's streets, if Oldham is a typical example, now deserve more than just a shake of the head.
It is nothing less than anarchy on the streets.
A young girl is gang-raped by five men.
Other reports of abuse pour into the police control centre.
Meanwhile hordes of teenagers are permitted to wander in and out of bars and venues becoming more and more intoxicated.
By three in the morning, the majority of them are senseless with alcohol and lucky if they can get home unharmed.
Other, ordinary, law-abiding citizens cower in their homes from 8pm onwards, denied any chance of a night out.
The Panorama documentary painted an appalling picture of a local council at the mercy of around five thousand kids every weekend.
They seem powerless to do anything about it.
The best idea they have come up with is to force the kids to queue for a drink while watched by two policemen and five bouncers.
Am I alone in thinking this is the work of Satan in action? Do any of these young people know anything about the love of Christ, consideration for others, respect for elders, respect for property, self-respect, treating their body like a temple, common decency, sexual restraint? Or is this an amoral youth out of control? Meanwhile the local superstore grocers rake in huge profits selling alcohol even before the evening has started.
One group of girls getting ready to go out admitted in front of camera that they finished off a bottle of Vodka even before they left the house.
What is the answer to such a complete loss of innocence? Education, christian youth mentoring, local council powers to curb the greed of big business, powers to the police to put a stop to antisocial behaviour at the root, youth counselling offices? Any or all of these would just scratch the surface.
We seem to be taking a step back into a Dickensian world of poverty, bad education and low moral values.
