How to Get a Stinky Smell Out of Your Vacuum
- 1). Change the vacuum cleaner belt, if you notice a rubbery smell while vacuuming. The belt may be worn and ready to break. After the belt is exchanged for a new one, the vacuum cleaner won't leave a rubbery smell in the room.
- 2). Check the vacuum hoses for clogs. Pet hair clogs, for example, often cause unpleasant odors when left in the hose for any length of time. Get rid of any clogs you find.
- 3). Remove the vacuum cleaner bag. Toss it in the trash can, even if it isn't full. If you have a bagless canister, empty it. Collected dust and dirt can emit a foul odor that is forced back into the air every time the vacuum is used. It is best to start with a fresh vacuum cleaner bag or clean canister.
- 4). Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of baking soda or powdered carpet deodorizer inside a new vacuum cleaner bag or bagless canister before attaching it to your vacuum. This will get rid of any existing odor from the vacuum, and will help prevent any further foul odors from forming.
- 5). Wash the exterior vacuum cleaner bag if it has become dingy and dusty. You may have to wash it by hand and set it outside to dry. Read the owner's manual for instructions for your vacuum cleaner.
- 6). Spray the vacuum cleaner exterior bag with an essential oil spray. Mix 8 ounces of distilled water with 20 drops of your favorite essential oil. Essential oils that add a pleasant scent to your vacuum include lavender, ylang-ylang, geranium, vanilla and cinnamon.
