Five Reasons Kids Should Not Go To Church With Prom Dresses And Tuxedos

It really is one of the most special nights in a high school student's life. It is a time to dress up in the finest clothes: dresses for girls, tuxedos for boys. For many, it is the first time in a young person's life that they can actually see the adult blossoming inside of them. It is also a time for them to look and feel handsome or beautiful.

And while these are all good things for your kids to experience, there is a time and a place. At the prom on a Saturday night is the time and the place. Sunday morning at church is not, and here are five reasons why:

Distraction for others: Most people come to church for worship. It is a personal bond edifying their relationship with God. Seeing garments such as prom dresses and tuxedos, which clearly draw attention to them, can clearly pose a distraction for everyone involved. Keep in mind that church is not supposed to be about you. It is supposed to be about God.

Unfocused minds: If a young person is still in their prom clothes the next morning, chances are his or her mind is still on the events of the night before. It is to be expected. After all, a prom does not happen but about two, maybe four times in a person's life. While there is nothing wrong with cherishing those moments, it is not good to let anything interfere with something that is designed to build your relationship with God.

Unhealthy perceptions: Prom attire is very revealing, particularly as it relates to girls. Strapless or sleeveless gowns show more skin than is ever appropriate for a young person to wear in a house of worship. Everything about the Christian faith promotes modest living. Everything about today's prom attire does not.

Church is not a ball: Church is not a place where you have to turn off your feelings of happiness and joy, but it is also not a deejay-led dance club, and shouldn't be treated as such. The social context of prom gowns and tuxedos indicates reasons all together different than worship. Girls try to outdo each other, and guys get a little too involved doing their best James Bond impersonation.

If it causes others to stumble: The Bible warns Christians that in the gray areas of faith, some things may not be a sin to you, but can cause other people to stumble. Doing something intentionally that you feel is okay without any regard to the feelings of those you worship with is never a good idea, and it is very possible that the nature of the clothing could cause your friends and fellow Christians to stumble. Whether it means taking their minds off their worship or directing their minds toward unhealthy thoughts and desires, prom attire is not a good idea for the worship assembly.

It is only one day, but every Lord's day should belong to Him, and not to a high school celebration. Respect yourself, your Christian family, and your God, by keeping your prom attire in the right time and place.
