Homemade Country Gifts & Crafts
- Wind chimes make a soothing sound when hung outside. Pick three or four clay pots in different sizes, so they nestle inside each other loosely. Paint and embellish the pots with stencils and decals. Use jute or macramé twine to tie the pots together with knots so the pots hang upside down from largest to the smallest on the bottom. Tie a 1-inch wooden bead at the bottom in the smallest pot. Hang the chime and cut off any extra jute or macramé twine.
- Potpourri adds a wonderful aroma to your home. The natural scents in potpourri can include cedar or juniper wood shavings, lavender, roses, geraniums, violets, pinion pinecones, rose oil or flowers, cinnamon bark, marjoram and other flowers and spices. Add 10 to 20 drops of your favorite essential oil to 4 cups of dried flowers and herbs. Place the mixture in a closed container for two to three weeks to allow the scents to penetrate the plant material. Use small sachets to give away the potpourri as gifts.
- A homemade birdhouse can add décor to your yard and attract local birds. Use a milk carton or a gourd. Decorate it with enamel-based paint, decals and embellishments. Cut a hole in the side of the house. A 2 1/8-inch hole is required for purple martins, while a 1-inch hole will attract wrens and chickadees. If using a gourd, clean out any seeds and fibers. Drill three ¼-inch holes in the bottom of the gourd for ventilation and drainage. Use twine to hang the birdhouse in a sheltered area, at least 6 feet from the ground. Fill the birdhouse with food.
- Homemade soap lets you be creative by infusing your own signature concoction. Select ¼ cup of flowers, herbs and oils. Place the mixture in the top of a double broiler. Heat the mixture until it's simmering. Add 2 cups of grated glycerin soap or a pure, unscented mild soap. Mix the soap well and pour it into a mold. Once the soap cools, remove it from the mold. Let it age for one month. Wrap the soap in a pretty ribbon when giving it away as a gift.
