Pontin"s Job Vacancies
Now that the Britannia Hotel Group have taken over the troubled holiday camp organisation, Pontin's, youngsters may once again feel encouraged to take the plunge and sign up with the star-making company.
Alex Langsam, Brittannia's owner, has certainly said that he sees Pontin's as having a 'bright future while retaining the best traditions of the past.
' Pontin's (named after its founder, Fred Pontin) currently has 850 employees and holiday camps at Brean Sands, Camber Sands, Southport, Prestatyn and Pakefield but it will need a lot more staff if the camps are to recapture anything like their former glory.
This would then be a full circle for Pontin's.
Back in the 50's, the camps would have been jam-packed with holidaymakers every summer but cheap air travel, package holidays, the attraction of more exotic climates and the end of the era when it was the norm to go on holiday with one's workmates, all sent them into decline.
Now, with soaring fuel costs, carbon footprint awareness, terrorist attacks, the falling pound and polluted beaches, a holiday at home suddenly seems appealing once again.
Like its arch-rival Butlins, Pontin's has an in-camp entertainment section.
These 'Blue Coats' as they are called, were once the starting point for many big stars on their paths to success and the object of envy for ambitious teenagers in the 50's and 60's.
If working as a DJ, pantomime character, games organiser etc appeals and you see yourself as an entertainer, love working on a stage and possess genuine talent, then a Blue Coat job is for you.
However, a holiday camp is not just about entertaining people.
They also need catering and cleaning staff, lifeguards, shop assistants and so on.
Obviously, whatever you do, you will be working with, or very close to, children of all ages therefore you will need an enhanced CRB check and clearance.
One thing to bear in mind: since holiday camps only come to life in the warmer months (from the Spring Term to the Autumn Term half-term holidays), they tend not to need people outside of those times.
As a result, most employment contracts at Pontin's are likely to be fixed term and run from the beginning of February to the end of October.
If you are planning to work for them, you should consider how you are going to earn money outside of these times - perhaps by delivering Christmas post or by working in a shop over the Christmas and January Sales periods? Working at a holiday camp has some obvious perks such as free accommodation, subsidised meals, cheap holidays (you're on one!), a free uniform and use of the camp's facilities outside of your working hours.
Not only that, if you are fortunate enough to become a Blue Coat, you will have the opportunity to shine.
