How to Renovate Small Washrooms

    • 1). Figure out your allotted budget for the bathroom renovation as your budget will largely determine what you will or will not be able to do. Even a small washroom can end up costing a fortune with high-end finishings such as nickel faucets, a rain showerhead, glass tile, and a jetted bathtub. Compare the costs of fixtures, finishings, flooring and accessories.

    • 2). Opt for a small, corner shower rather than a full-sized bathtub if you do not necessarily need a tub. Consider the placement of the largest fixtures. If your budget allows for it, draw up some designs to see if you can make more room by re-positioning the toilet or sink or by removing a vanity sink and replacing it with a pedestal sink.

    • 3). Maximize a sense of space in a small washroom by putting vertically striped wallpaper on the walls to emphasize height. Alternatively, extend your tile right up to the ceiling to add a sense of height. Another option is to paint wide, horizontal stripes around the room to make the walls seem broader.

    • 4). Choose light paint and tile colors. Darker colors may make the bathroom seem smaller and closed in. Avoid busy prints for wallpapers or faux painting techniques on the walls. Opt for larger tiles and use smaller grout lines for floor tiles as it may help give the illusion that the washroom is larger than it really is. Allow the floor area to remain as bare as possible so that it appears more spacious.

    • 5). Make your washroom appear as large as possible with lots of natural light or the right artificial light. Designate lights strategically, such as a row of bulbs over the primary mirror. Recessed pot lights and wall sconces can help to eliminate dark shadows. Skylights are an energy-saving method to provide more natural light.
