    • 1). Ask a permanent resident or U.S. citizen relative to complete form I-130, Petition for Alien Relative, on your behalf (see References). If this relative is a permanent resident, you must be that person's spouse or unmarried child to be eligible. If this relative is a U.S. citizen, you must be a sibling, child or spouse. You can also be that relative's parent, as long as the relative is at least 21 years of age.

    • 2). Include the $420 filing fee with your I-130 application. Do not include cash. Pay with check or money order.

    • 3). Mail your completed I-130 form to the U.S. Embassy that has jurisdiction over your country, if you live outside the United States or Canada. Send the completed form to the USCIS Chicago Lockbox if you live in Canada or the United States:

    • 4). Ask family members who are applying for the green card to complete Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status (see Resources). You will receive Form I-797 to show that Form I-130 has been received or approved. Include a copy of Form I-797 when you mail Form I-485. Include the $985 filing fee with this form.

    • 5). Mail Form I-485 to the address indicated on the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services web site (see Resources).
