How to Choose Cat Litter
- 1). Evaluate the regular or traditional clay option. This type of litter is available in scented and unscented options. There is no clumping factor in traditional clay, so wet and spoiled litter will have to be scooped after each voiding to maintain a clean and fresh box. Traditional clay is very cheap, but it's very time-consuming. If you work long hours or don't have the time to scoop regularly, this may not be the best litter option for you. In addition, if you have asthma or allergies, the dust from this litter may not be a healthy option.
- 2). If scooping after each void with regular clay doesn't seem practical, consider the clumping litter. Clumping litter is a good alternative to regular litter. Whenever your cat voids, the litter will automatically clump together so that it is easy for you to pick up. It comes in scented and unscented options. It is more expensive than traditional clay litter but requires less maintenance.
- 3). A great alternative to traditional and clumping clay litter is paper. Paper is a bit more expensive than traditional clay, but the advantages make up for the price. It is softer on the paws, controls odor very well, is easy to maintain and is a safe option in case your cat would accidentally ingest some. Paper litter comes in different types, from shreds to pellets.
- 4). Another great option is litter made out of wheat flakes such as corn. These flakes operate the same way as clumping clay; however, they are safe for the cat, biodegradable, contains no dust (which is helpful for owners and cats with asthma and allergies), and is much softer than the other choices. While this type of litter only comes in the unscented option, it provides great odor control.
