How to Identify Your Singer Sewing Machine Model
- 1). Identify the year your machine was manufactured. If your machine was manufactured later than 1960, you'll find the model number on the front or side of the machine. For models manufactured between 1970 and 1989, the model number is found on the upper left front panel of the machine above the needle. If the model was manufactured in 1990, the model number is located on the side of the machine below the hand wheel.
For models manufactured between 1960 and 1969, the model number is located on the machine's right front panel near the stitch length controller. For models manufactured prior to 1960, the model number may be located on a small plate on the lower right hand front panel of the machine. However, not all machines manufactured prior to 1960 have a model number. - 2). Locate the serial number. For models manufactured prior to 1960, the serial number is located on the lower right panel of the machine. Once located, the company's website lists model numbers for each serial number grouping. See the resources section for this website.
- 3). Refer to the company's website for specific model numbers. Before 1900, serial numbers were numbers only. Models manufactured after 1900 have serial numbers beginning with one or two letters. To identify the model number, the serial numbers must begin with a letter. Models manufactured between 1851 and 1870 are not available due to lost records.
In the 1900s, the company began putting a single letter in front of the serial number to indicate where the machine was made. Beginning in 1910, the first letter indicated the "series" of the sewing machine, and the model number can be located at the website located in the resources section.
