    • 1). Prepare the surface of the foundation or chimney to receive the rock. Clean concrete of all surface dirt and oil and let it dry. Rough up stucco or painted surfaces with a power chipping hammer, or cover brick or other rough surfaces with concrete fiber board.

    • 2). Attach steel angle irons to the base of the foundation or chimney with expansion anchors as a foundation to take the weight of the stone. Use a level to ensure the angle irons are level.

    • 3). Snap-chalk lines every few feet up the work surface to keep the rock level as the rows rise up the work surface.

    • 4). Lay out the rock near the work site and arrange the stones for setting.

    • 5). Spread a 1/4-inch layer of acrylic-fortified thin-set mortar on the back of the first stone and push it against the base of the foundation or chimney resting on the angle iron.

    • 6). Set additional rock in the same manner as Step 4 until the bottom row is complete.

    • 7). Weave corners by setting rock from alternating sides of the corner and use angle cuts to give the corners a random look. Make cuts and shape the rocks with a hand-held grinder equipped with a diamond blade.

    • 8). Set the second row of rock so that lengths of rock cover or bridge the seams of two abutting rocks beneath. Continue setting rows of rocks up the work surface until the project is complete.
