Microsoft Word for the iPhone
- DataViz is a long-established software developer when it comes to portable word processing, having originally released its Documents To Go package for the Palm Pilot range of PDAs in the early 2000s, and its current selection of iPhone apps are fully compatible with Microsoft Word documents. Documents To Go allows you to transfer your Word docs to the app via iTunes, through online cloud storage services or through a direct synchronization between the iPhone application and your computer. It offers full editing and formatting and is compatible with Word's proprietary ".doc" and ".docx" file formats.
- Quickoffice is a suite of word processing and office applications provided by the software developer of the same name. Both free and paid versions of Quickoffice are available for the iPhone, and both are able to load and view Word documents direct from your computer or through cloud storage services such as Dropbox and Google Docs. The Pro version offers a full Word editing suite that is also able to manipulate and format images, text boxes and other advanced graphical elements achievable in a Word doc.
- As part of every online Google account, Google offers access to a free, Web-based word processing suite called Google Docs. Files are uploaded to Google Docs from your computer, which can then be viewed, edited, saved and exported all from within your Web browser. Google Docs is fully accessible either through the iPhone's built-in Safari Web browser or through the free Google app. You can view, edit and save your Word documents in Google Docs, with the advantage of saving them online rather than on the iPhone. An Internet connection is required throughout its use, however.
- A host of desktop remote control applications are available for the iPhone, which allow you to connect to your PC or Mac over the Internet from the iPhone and take control of it. Applications such as LogMeIn Ignition and TeamViewer provide access to full mouse and keyboard controls using the iPhone's touchscreen, allowing you to run official Microsoft Office software on your desktop computer and use it directly from the iPhone. An Internet connection is required, however, and the large amounts of streaming data often means that Wi-Fi must be used rather than 3G cellular data.
