How to Build a Water Fountain with an Underground Basin
- 1). Dig a hole for the plastic basin. The hole should be approximately the same size as the dimensions of the basin. Place the basin in the ground and use a straightedge to make sure that it is level with the ground. Place a concrete block inside the basin keep it from moving or shifting in the ground.
- 2). Take the receptacle that will be used as the fountain and drill a hole in the bottom. The hole must be large enough to accommodate the plastic tube attached to the submersible pump. Most tubes from water pumps are approximately 2 inches in diameter. You can drill a hole in the bottom of the fountain by using a drill with the appropriately sized drill bit.
- 3). Cut a hole in the center of the metal screening by using a pair of shears or snips for cutting metal. The hole should be large enough for the plastic water tube and the pump's power cord. Next, take the pump with the water tube and place it in the basin. Place the metal screen over the top of the basin and then thread the power cord and water tube through the hole in the screen.
- 4). Push the plastic tube from the water pump through the hole in the bottom of the fountain. Then place the fountain on top of the metal screening. Fill both the fountain and the basin to the top with water. Drag the power cord to a nearby GFCI outlet. You can hide the plug by snaking it around plants or rocks.
- 5). Add decorative outdoor rocks over the top of the metal screen to keep it hidden. Then plug in the water pump. The water should flow from the water container and over the sides. The basin below will catch the water and the pump will continue to keep it circulating.
