The tourist places in India are famousfor the history that is attached to them. Whenever we think of the country the first thing that comes to our mind is its age. For thousands of years India has welcomed and stayed with foreigners who have in course of time become residents. Geographically too the nation is gifted with variegated features. On the north the Himalayas flank the borders while protecting the nation from the chilly winds of China, in the east the presence of dense mangrove forests has made way for the dwelling of the Royal Bengal Tiger. The western border is embedded with the Great Indian Desert.  Peninsular India is flanked by the Western and Eastern Ghats. In the south, Indian Ocean; Arabian Sea in the west and Bay of Bengal in the east has covered the borders of the nation.

The climate which is partly temperate and partly tropical has given way to a gifted vegetation cover throughout the country at different latitudes. The northern part of the country too has vegetation that houses a huge range of flora and fauna. In Uttar Pradesh there is a district called Lakhimpur, Kheri. Situated along the Nepal border the district headquarters are situated in the Lakhimpur city. In this district lies one of the most famous national parks of the nation, the Dudhwa National Park.

Kheri gets its name from a tomb built for Saiyid Khurd who expired in the year 1563. However another theory says that the abundant presence of khair trees that covered large tracts of land in the area. Lakhimpur was initially called Laxmipur. According to the epic Mahabharata, it belonged to the city of Hastinapur. Many villages have been found with ancient mounds of sculptures. Near Khairabad the statue of a stone horse was found which has an inscription of Samudra Gupta. The replica is now kept in the Lucknow Museum and teaches about the Ashwamedha yajna wherein a royal horse was left to run through territories so that the importance of the king and his conquests could be ascertained.

It is the only national park in the country and is home to a large number of rare and endangered species that include the national animal – tiger, leopard, swamp deer, hispid hare and Bengal florican among others. The flora majorly comprises sal trees and is divided into northern tropical semi – evergreen forest, northern Indian most deciduous forest, tropical seasonal swamp forest an northern tropical dry deciduous forest. Some other trees are asna, shisham, jamun, gular, sehore and bahera. About 19% of the forest ground has grasslands. It is said that some of the trees present in the park are more than 150 years old.

The district of Kheri is a part of Lucknow and is also the largest one in the state. As per the Government of India the district is a Minority Concentrated District in India and one of the most sanitized districts. So any time you visit one of the cleanest districts of India, do not forget the Dudhwa National Park.
