    Symptoms

    • Salmonella poisoning symptoms can include stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and fever.

    Diagnosis

    • A stool sample must be collected and tested for salmonella bacteria to diagnose salmonella poisoning.

    Standard Treatment

    • Dehydration from diarrhea and vomiting is the primary concern with salmonella poisoning, so the treatment is simply to drink plenty of fluids. Severe cases may require intravenous fluids.

    Antibiotics

    • In some cases, salmonella bacteria may spread from the intestines into the blood, requiring treatment with antibiotics to prevent more serious illness or even death.

    Reiter's Syndrome

    • In rare instances, Reiter's syndrome, a type of reactive arthritis, can develop from salmonella poisoning. Treatments may include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), corticosteroids or other arthritis remedies.
