Salmonella Poisoning Symptoms & Treatment
- Salmonella poisoning symptoms can include stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and fever.
- A stool sample must be collected and tested for salmonella bacteria to diagnose salmonella poisoning.
- Dehydration from diarrhea and vomiting is the primary concern with salmonella poisoning, so the treatment is simply to drink plenty of fluids. Severe cases may require intravenous fluids.
- In some cases, salmonella bacteria may spread from the intestines into the blood, requiring treatment with antibiotics to prevent more serious illness or even death.
- In rare instances, Reiter's syndrome, a type of reactive arthritis, can develop from salmonella poisoning. Treatments may include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), corticosteroids or other arthritis remedies.
