    • 1). Place a clean rag on a flat surface. This should be a rag that you do not mind getting stains because the ink reservoir will stain.

    • 2). Lay the highlighter pen on the rag and inspect the rear end of the pen. Look for a seam between the end of the pen and a cap. Some highlighters have larger caps than others, while a few have caps that look very thin; still others have caps that are plugs in the end of the pen.

    • 3). Hold the highlighter firmly in one hand and grab the cap with a pair of pliers in your other hand--if the cap on the end looks like it might twist off. Turn the cap counterclockwise with the pliers. If the cap and the pen barrel move together it is not a twist off cap.

    • 4). Insert the blade of a utility knife between the seam of the barrel and cap. If you have a plug end, insert the knife between the plug and inside edge of the pen barrel. Rock the utility knife handle up and down around the seam to pry the cap off the pen. Pry around the inside circumference with the knife if your pen has a plug end.

    • 5). Remove the top of the highlighter pen if the rear end of the pen has no cap. The top is the part that covers the felt tip of the pen. Look for a small indentation below the felt tip and the barrel of the pen. Insert the tip of the utility knife into this indentation and pry the end off the pen.

    • 6). Grab the end of the highlighter reservoir with a pair of tweezers or needle nose pliers once you have an end open. Pull he reservoir out of the pen. The reservoir resemble a round sponge full of ink. Lay the reservoir on the rag.
