About Gilbert V. Hemsley Jr.:

The Gilbert V. Hemsley Jr. Internship in Lighting offers young lighting designers a unique opportunity to gain experience in a professional environment.  Gilbert Vaughn Hemsley, Jr., was a noted U.S. lighting designer and teacher of lighting design.  Hemsley designed for the New York City Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, the Martha Graham Dance Company, the American Ballet Theatre, the Bolshoi Ballet, the Stuttgart Ballet, many Broadway plays and musicals, National Ballet of Cuba, and many more.

He was also the production manager for the inaugurations of U.S. Presidents Richard Nixon and Jimmy Carter.

However, even with all of his high profile work, Gilbert’s main passion was teaching.   He dedicated his life to the training of young theater professionals. Hemsley taught lighting design at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and was widely acknowledged for his generosity with students, many of whom served as assistants at New York City Opera and elsewhere.  Beginning with the first intern in 1984, the internship has continued his legacy by providing a unique experience to young designers as they begin their professional careers.  Helmsley was responsible for the launching of so many careers in the lighting that an internship was a logical extension and a tribute to the man who gave so much back to his art.  The Gilbert Hemsley Lighting Program was established in 1983.

A Career in Lighting Design:

One career option for individuals possessing a love for both art and technology is a career as a lighting designer.

Today’s lighting designers must have an artisitc eye to convey a story or message, whether it is lighting a broadway play, a rock concert or the interior of a historical building or church.  At the same time, they also need to be in tune with the latest in technology, as this industry is one that is constantly changing and always on the move.

The tools available to lighting designers include the latest in moving lights, LED technology, 3Dprojection, and computer controlled motion.   And as shows continue to get bigger and better, they are constantly pushing the envelope and looking for new creative ways on how to control the show.  Companies like Robe Lighting, GrandMA, Kinesys, Christie Projection, and others are rapidly advancing this arena and providong more and more ïnstruments in their design kit.  However, even with all these “gadgets” it still comes back to knowledge and talent and the overall art of design.  Some of the most impactful shows are the simplest, using subtle elements to convey a mood and tell a story using various forms of light.
