How to Fish With a Bait Cast Reel

    Adjusting your baitcast reel.

    • 1). Turn the fine tune dial to the right until it starts to get tight. This is a round knob located beside of the reel handle. Do not tighten the knob all the way down.

    • 2). Hold the reel in your hand and point the rod tip straight out, parallel to the ground. You want your lure to be dangling from the end of your rod.

    • 3). Place your thumb on the engage button that lets the line out. At the same time adjust your thumb so that it is resting on your fishing line on the spool. Push in the button to engage the reel's spool. Slowly let your thumb off the spool. Your lure should not fall at all because you have tightened up the fine tune knob.

    • 4). Begin loosening the fine tune knob by turning it counterclockwise. Loosen it until your lure begins to fall slowly. Your reel has now been tuned to throw the lure you have tied on.

    Casting

    • 1). Hold your reel and rod just like you did in Step 2 in the first section. Place your thumb on the engage button and your spool.

    • 2). Push in the engage button and apply pressure to your spool with your thumb so that the lure does not fall.

    • 3). Bring the rod behind your head and make an overhead cast. Let go of the spool with your thumb once your rod is pointing in front of you. This step is just like casting with a spin cast reel that kids use.

    • 4). Before your lure hits the water begin applying pressure to the spool with your thumb. Your thumb is acting like the brakes on a vehicle. You want to slow your lure down instead of it hitting the water at full speed.

    • 5). Once your lure hits the water you can engage the reel by turning the reel handle. Now you simply reel in your lure like you would with any other fishing reel, by turning the handle.
