If you are enjoying the experience of renting one of the beautiful villas in Amalfi dotted along the coast in late October or early November, you will get the chance to celebrate Halloween with the Italians. It's an experience not to be missed!

Halloween: A New Holiday

Halloween, with its traditionally pagan roots, has long been discouraged in the strongly Catholic nation of Italy over the years. However, with the influx of American influences the children, and many adults, have begun to embrace the holiday as a day of fancy dress and themed parties. Do not be surprised, even if you are only renting one of the villas in Amalfi in the area, if trick-or-treaters come knocking on your door if you are there at this time of the year.

The Italian Way

Italy typically celebrated their version of Halloween on November 1st, which is known as €All Souls Day'. Different localities in Italy add regional touches to costumes and traditional dishes. Delicacies such as Fave dei Morti (whose origins pre-date Christian times when fava beans were a ritual offering to the dead and the Gods of the underworld) were baked in celebration of All Souls Day. However, today, they come in the form of delicious fava bean-shaped cookies.

Local Celebrations

While staying in the area you'll have easy access the local revelry. Zombies, ghouls, witches and other spooky characters fill the streets and events, such as the disco night at the exclusive nightclub Le Mosaique, are held in Ravello, just 20 minutes away. The club hosts multiple DJs to appeal to all musical preferences, and the special effects, decorations and animation will certainly get you into the Halloween spirit.

At Tramonti, which is also only about 20 minutes from the villas in Amalfi, the Farmhouse Da Queen hosts an evening of dancing and feasting, with prizes for the most original costume. For a slightly more low key celebration, try heading to The Sailing Ship restaurant in the picturesque town of Atrani. A wonderful themed evening will await you, offering a seasonally crafted menu featuring the pumpkin as an ingredient in many of their exquisite dishes.

It's clear the Italians have embraced the celebration of Halloween in true style. The traditions of jack-o-lanterns and trick-or-treating are given a unique Italian twist. It's a wonderful time to book in to one of the villas in Amalfi. They are an ideal accommodation option and many feature luxuries such as beautiful panoramic views, luxuriant verandas and even swimming pools. The region is a stunning place to visit at any time, but during times of seasonal celebrations it is that bit more special.
