How Can I Fit a McCall's Multiple-Size Pattern to Myself?

    • 1). Take exact measurements of your entire body using a flexible measuring tape. McCall's suggests that women measure the circumference of the widest part of the bust and the circumference of the line just below the bust. All patterns will require measuring the smallest part of the waist, the widest circumference of the hips and the length of your back from the bottom of the hairline to the small of the back. Finally, measure from the top of the shoulder, down the arm and to the wrist. Take any extra measurements called for in the specific McCall's pattern. When measuring your circumference make sure the measuring tape fits snugly on your body but does not squeeze you. Note all of your measurements.

    • 2). Apply these measurements to the McCall's pattern sizing guide, which should come with the multiple-size pattern you want to sew. McCall's patterns tend to fall into four large categories of sizing. Choose the pattern size that fits your measurements as closely as possible.

    • 3). Modify the pattern if necessary. If you fit into a general sizing category on the multiple size pattern but find that the pattern will still be too wide, short or uncomfortable at a certain part of your body, modify the pattern. For example, if you like the measurements of the pattern but want a longer hemline to suit your longer legs, add a few extra inches to the skirt or pant pattern pieces. If you have a small bust or waist than the sizing area you officially fit into, simply remove a small amount of width from those pattern pieces. Be careful not to cut too much off of the pattern, as you may find you will need the extra cloth in the sewing and fitting process.
