Using custom external drives will allow you to load applications or games into Wii without voiding your warranty when you open the system. Although it is possible to install physical devices inside the case, this voids your warranty and adds the risk that an inexperienced user will perform permanent damage to the device's internal components. There are a number of external disk drives that are compatible with the Wii, all of which can be connected using an available USB slot on the machine. - The Polaroid DR110 External DVD-ROM is a 8x DVD-ROM that is capable of recording CDs and is compatible with all major computing platforms. It is capable of interfacing to the Wii and can load custom content. You will need to connect to a USB slot to access the application. No external power adapter is needed, as it uses the USB power feed from your Wii.
- The Iomega SuperSlim allows you to burn and play back in 8x speed. It supports double layer DVDs and is compatible with both PCs and the Wii.
- The Targus XT11 is a portable DVD player and recorder that comes with guaranteed Mac, Windows and Linux support. You can install the XT11 on your Wii by connecting it and restarting the system. The XT11 operates at speeds of 6x.
- The ASUS 08D1S was designed to work for both PC and consoles and supports standard and double layer DVD discs for enhanced storage capacity. It comes with a standing base and can be mounted next to your Wii on top of a table or television.
