Infertility And The Procedures To Defeat It

Infertility is a broad range of conditions rendering a couple unable to bear children naturally. These conditions may affect the female or the male, or, coincidentally, both. At one time, it meant that a couple would go childless over their entire lifetime. The condition of infertility is usually diagnosed only after one year of attempts to conceive a child have failed by natural means.

About 7 percent of couples of childbearing age worldwide are considered infertile. Of these, the infertile party is split about equally; about 35 percent of infertile people are women and about 35 percent of them are men. Roughly 20 percent affect both members of the relationship.

For some sufferers of infertility, minor changes in habit may resolve the problem. For example, it has been found that males who wear tight-fitting briefs may sometimes experience an overheating of the testicles which is injurious to sperm. Looser fitting underwear sometimes resolves the issue. Behavioral anxiety due to fertility failure may be addressed by psychological treatment.

The earliest procedure to resolve the problem of infertility was a simple one: adoption. Because the remaining 93 percent of the population is considered fertile (although some people, up to 23 percent of the population, who are normally considered fertile experience brief infertility), and some of them who bear children may not want children or are, for various reasons and conditions, unable to raise children, these children are given in adoption to people who desperately want them. Until nearly forty years ago, adoption was the singular legal option for infertile couples to have children.

Medical science has developed a number of semi-artificial procedures to resolve infertility. One type is called in vitro fertilization (IVF), which fertilizes the ovum outside of the body in a petrie dish. The resulting embryo is then implanted in the uterus for normal fetal development. There are a number of variations in this procedure, but they all begin and end with these major steps.  IVF is a relatively expensive procedure and is often necessary to repeat a number of times before a successful pregnancy is achieved. As a result, it is typically a procedure of last resort, having tried other less invasive procedures first.

Another common alternative is in vivo fertilization. This is similar to in vitro fertilization, the major difference being that the ovum remains in the body and the sperm are introduced to the ovum by artificial delivery. This procedure is a carryover from animal husbandry in which mares, cows, does, ewes, etc, are artificially inseminated. This procedure has a number of alternative details, all of which present the sperm to the ovum by assisted means to achieve fertilization.

There are some surgical techniques that may be all that is necessary to overcome an issue of infertility. Once corrected, conception is often achieved by entirely natural means without any other treatment necessary.
