How to Use a Thunderbird Junk Email Filter

    • 1). Click the inbox and select the "Tools" tab. Click "Account Settings" from the drop-down menu.

    • 2). Select "Junk Settings" from the left sidebar. Place a check mark in the box to enable adaptive junk mail controls. Place a check mark in the box to designate storage of junk messages. Thunderbird provides a junk folder for this purpose and you can select it beneath this heading. Click "OK" to close the junk settings window.

    • 3). Train the junk mail filter as you receive emails in your inbox. When you receive a junk email, click the orange junk icon above the reading pane to transfer this email to your junk mail folder. Over time, Thunderbird will learn what you consider junk mail and will move this mail to your junk mail folder automatically as it arrives.

    • 4). Click the junk mail folder and look through the emails contained in this folder. Move out any emails that you do not consider junk mail. By moving emails out of the junk mail folder, you also train Thunderbird to filter e-mails.

    • 5). Click the "Tools" tab and select "Message Filters" from the drop-down menu. Click the "New" button on the right side of the window to make a new junk mail filter rule. Enter a name for your message filter in the empty field at the top of the window. Click the first drop-down menu to select the criteria for the rule. Choose between the subject, the "From" line, the body of the email and more. Click the next drop-down menu to set the filter to find emails that contain certain words and enter those words into the blank field. Designate a junk folder for storage of these emails. Click "OK" to exit the window.
