How to Modify a TRENDnet USB External Antenna
- 1). Place a sheet of newspaper on a table. Unscrew the external antenna from the back of the TRENDnet USB wireless router with your hands.
- 2). Hold the antenna in one hand by the rod. Hold the pliers in the other hand. Clamp the jaws of the pliers around the base of the antenna. Twist the pliers counter-clockwise to loosen the base from the rod.
- 3). Rotate the rod counter-clockwise with your fingers to separate it from the base. Pull the rod off the wire that is attached to the antenna's base. Put the rod aside, as you will not need it when you reassemble the antenna.
- 4). Measure four inches up from the antenna's base. Cut the wire at the 4 inch mark with scissors. Dispose of the remaining wire remnant.
- 5). Measure an inch in from one end of the solid core copper wire. Place the inch mark of the copper wire against the head of a wood screw. Wind the copper wire down the wood screw until you reach the tip of the screw. Reverse the process and wind the copper wire up the wood screw until you reach the head. Repeat this until you reach the end of the copper wire. Press the end of the copper wire against the wood screw to hold it in place.
- 6). Pull the wood screw out of the wound copper wire and put it off to the side.
- 7). Heat the soldering iron for six minutes. Apply a drop of solder to the end of the wire that is attached to the base. Let the solder cool for two minutes.
- 8). Place the end of the solid core copper wire alongside the end of the wire attached to the antenna's base. Place the tip of the soldering iron on the solid core copper wire.
- 9). Remove the tip of the soldering iron when the solder on the wire attached to the base begins to liquefy. Continue holding the solid core copper wire against the wire attached to the antenna's base for another two minutes. Unplug the soldering iron.
- 10
Place an end of the plastic drinking straw over the end of the solid core copper wire. Push the plastic drinking straw down the length of the solid core copper wire until it reaches the antenna's base. - 11
Apply a strip of cellophane tape around the end of the plastic drinking straw where it meets the antenna's base to secure it. - 12
Screw the base back into the threaded connector on the TRENDnet USB wireless router.
