    Removal

    • 1). Cover the area surrounding your work area, including tubs, floors, toilets and other nearby installations, with drop cloths. Hardened pieces of grout can scratch sensitive surfaces such as ceramics or porcelain.

    • 2). Line up the blade of a flat-bladed screwdriver or chisel with one edge of a line of grout. Use a blade that is no more than ¼ inch thick to give you the best control.

    • 3). Gently tap the back end of the screwdriver or chisel with a small hammer to chip off pieces of the grout. Continue to chip at one area until you see unglazed portions of tile.

    • 4). Move into a remaining area of grout and continue to chisel in the direction of the grout you already removed. This will help give you better control over the chisel and prevent scratching or chipping the tiles.

    • 5). Continue to chisel away grout until you have removed all the grout necessary. Sweep in the joints with a brush to remove dust or small grout chips.

    Cleaning

    • 1). Mix one part hydrogen peroxide to two parts warm water into a sprayer bottle. Stir the solution or swirl the bottle to mix. You can also use household bleach, but the bleach may discolor ceramic tiles.

    • 2). Spray the cleaning solution onto the dirty grout, working in small sections so you can clean the grouted area before the solution dries.

    • 3). Scrub at stained grout with a toothbrush or soft scrub brush. Spray and scrub as needed to remove all dirt, mold and grime.

    • 4). Rinse the grouted surface with clean water to remove residual peroxide.
