Carpet and Upholstery

• 1). Place a thick layer of paper towels on top of fresh urine stains, followed by a thick layer of newspapers. Put newspaper under the soiled area if possible, like in the case of an area rug. The more urine you remove before it dries, the easier it will be to fully remove odors from the carpet or upholstery.
  
  
• 2). Stand on the combination of paper towels and newspaper with your full body weight for one minute to help absorb the urine.
  
  
• 3). Discard the material used to soak up the urine. The Humane Society of the United States recommends putting the soiled materials in their proper place like in a cat's litter box or in a dog's designated bathroom area outdoors.
  
  
• 4). Rinse the area with cool, clean water. Remove as much of the water as possible with a clean towel, lint-free cloth or wet vacuum.
  
  

Clothing and Washable Items

• 1). Place machine-washable items in the washer and set the controls as desired.
  
  
• 2). Add a 1 lb. box of baking soda to the washer along with the regular amount of washing detergent.
  
  
• 3). Add enzymatic cleaners from a pet store or online retailer to the washing machine if you can still smell pet odors after the initial washing.
  
  
• 4). Wash the items again, following the instructions on the enzymatic cleaner.
  
  
• 5). Dry the items only when the odor is gone.
