  A lieutenant is a member of the police force who resides directly under the chief. The position requires abnormal working hours, working in stressful situations and unpredictable weather conditions. Because it is a public service position, a lieutenant must be unbiased, and give fair treatment to every citizen in his jurisdiction.
  
  

Administrative

• The lieutenant must circulate and make clear messages and decisions of administration to his group members. He must evaluate all documentation and reports submitted by his team to stay abreast of all activities. He is also responsible for assisting in the expansion of work force policies and procedures. He must make sure his entire work force adheres to policies and procedures, as well as civil service rules set forth.
  
  

Management

• The lieutenant is responsible for the hiring and firing of employees within his work force, that are lower in rank than he is. Upon hiring of a new employee, the lieutenant must coach, train and supervise him until the employee is ready to hold his own. He must submit evaluations to the chief for every employee he is in charge of for annual reviews. His ratings will determine the fate of the employees in regards to promotions, raises and terminations.
  
  

Communicate

• The lieutenant must accurately communicate and maintain city information to the general public, city officials and other law enforcement agencies. He will attend community meetings and make himself available to answer any questions and inquiries about the safety and crime prevention of his city. He is held accountable for distributing every complaint his office receives to the appropriate personnel, so that it is handled accurately.
  
  

Field Work

• The lieutenant oversees and participates in many criminal law investigations that transpire within his jurisdiction. He will collect evidence and accumulate information as it pertains to the crime committed, as well as interrogate any known suspects. He must then prepare and organize the case for its scheduled court date.
  
  

Summary

• Under the direct supervision of the chief of police, the lieutenant is responsible overall for his police sergeants, subordinate officers and support staff. On average, a lieutenant makes around $65,000 to $80,000 per year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
