How to Manage the Costs Associated With Your Long Distance Relationship

A 2006 issue of Women's Health Magazine noted that long distance couples spend an average of $278 per month to keep their relationship going.
Statistics state that the average long distance couple resides about 125 miles apart and sees each other one and half times per month.
Just because you have decided to embark on a long distance relationship does not mean you have to incur high bills to keep up regular visits with your significant other.
Trying to keep the financial burden to a minimum can be challenging, however, there are some creative ways to still visit and not deplete your savings! Some ideas of cutting costs may include:
  • distribute the costs so that one person is not always held responsible - for example, if one person covers the airfare on one trip, then the other person covers the airfare the next time, OR if one person covers the airfare, the other person can pay for the remaining expenses for the duration of the visit
  • by booking a spot several weeks ahead of time, rather than spur-of-the-moment, you can save hundreds of dollars
  • choose a location to meet at that is situated midway between the two of you
  • picking a spot that is less touristy generally offers less costly lodging
  • the person who is not paying for the airfare could have the responsibility of creating the itinerary (dining, entertainment, social plans) and cover the associated costs
  • since weekends tend be be pricier than weekday traveling, returning from your trip on a Monday morning rather than on a Sunday can provide some savings
By sharing as much of the demanding parts of the relationship as possible, any possible feelings of resentment can be minimized.
When you and your partner discuss the financial aspects of the relationship, this communication can only serve to strengthen future challenges that will inevitably crop up.
By negotiating in this way, it shows that you are committed, dedicated to making sacrifices when the occasion calls for it, and helps build trust between the two of you.
