Mentor, n.
(from Mentor, the friend and counselor of Odysseus and Telemachus) a wise and faithful counselor.
Today the definition of a mentor is an experienced and knowledgeable person that you can rely on to help you make wise decisions.
This person could help you grow your business or show you how to get the most benefit out of a design job opportunity.
Everyone at every level needs someone to turn to for good information and answers to questions when they are in unfamiliar territory or getting over their skill level.
Not having someone to answer questions can cause you to miss out on an opportunity to grow your practice because you don't know what the next step is or how to pull all the pieces together.
In today's economy you need to be ready to jump when opportunities present themselves.
So, where and how do you find a mentor? It is not hard to do and there are several options.
Here are a few details to get you started.
Tip #1 Look around in your community and identify a couple Designers that you believe are knowledgeable and have businesses that you admire.
You want these Designers to be friendly and easy to approach.
You would also like to think that she would be a good energetic match for you.
Tip #2 Have a conversation or two with the chosen person in a social situation like an ASID meeting or a showroom event.
If you feel you have developed a rapport with her, extend a lunch invitation so that you can propose your plan.
At lunch, tell her how much you admire her career and her design business and ask her if she will help you.
Be specific about your goal, the project and what you want help with.
You must design and make an offer that is beneficial to both of you.
Do not expect to just take information from this person, it is critically important to financially pay for the time and generosity she has extended.
The most common way to reciprocate is to include her on a design job as an additional consultant so that she is being paid out of the fees generated by the job.
Be generous in your offer to share in the income and you will reap enormous benefits from your partnership.
Tip #3 Hire a private coach and mentor or join a coaching program so that you have the resources that you need.

Remember, a mentor or coach provides the information and support that you need to reach your personal goal.
The key is; you are responsible for the work of putting the information shared into action.
Either way you go be sure to choose a Mentor who inspires you and has a clear path you can follow to success.
