Minor Scarring

• If you don't have very many acne scars and they're less noticeable, there are several treatments that may be suitable for you. Dermabrasion is a procedure that involves removing layers of skin in order to bring the skin surrounding your scar down to its level, making it less noticeable. According to Acne.org, dermabrasion only helps correct shallow imperfections, and because most patients need repeat sessions in order to see full results, it can be an expensive treatment.
  
  Chemical peels can be done at the doctor's office or at an esthetician's clinic or spa. Chemical peels help to remove layers of skin, leaving you with a more uniform complexion. Some people do experience stinging, burning or itching with chemical peels, but this method of treatment is less expensive than many others.
  
  One of the most expensive treatments is laser resurfacing. Laser resurfacing uses a beam of light to correct shallow scarring. Most of the time, the laser cannot help your scar in one treatment, so repeat treatments are necessary.
  
  

Depressed Scars

• Scars that are noticeably sunken or depressed into the skin may require different treatment plans than minor scarring. If less invasive procedures don't work for depressed scars, surgery may be an option. For most depressed scars, the surgeon makes incisions around the scar, replacing the large scars with smaller surgical scars that may be treated with a less invasive procedure after they heal. For very large scars, skin grafts may be required to cover the spot where the scar once was.
  
  

Raised Scars

• Scar tissue that stands out from the skin is a raised scar. For many raised scars, dermabrasion, laser resurfacing or other less invasive treatments may be an option, depending on the scar. However, sometimes for a keloid, a common type of raised scar, cryotherapy is the best treatment option, according to Skin Care Physicians. Cryotherapy involves freezing skin tissue. Sometimes this can be done in a single treatment, but repeat treatments are sometimes necessary.
